youth social justice arts program
This program will be geared towards BIPOC youth ages 13-21 in Contra Costa and Alameda County. This program will be a safe place for youth to identify and address the issues they face such as; Discrimination, Education Inequities, Socio-Economic Struggles, Police Brutality, Racial Profiling, Street Violence and Family Crises. The main focus will be Youth Empowerment.
We want to not only help youth deal with these realities, we also want to help them develop the knowledge and skills to become agents of change for themselves and their communities through civic engagement, activism and community initiatives.
This program will be an introduction to grassroots organizing, artistic creation and expression, community engagement and community mobilizing.
The First Goal in this class is to foster Friendship, Empathy and Respect
Secondly we will engage in critical thinking!
We will challenge the participants to think about their surroundings: Neighbors/hoods, community, schools and Environment. The goal is to help the youth identify what they would like to improve, change, and challenge. We will have grassroots organizing instruction, musical/digital sound education and visual arts education with qualified instructors in each area.
Third, we will work on developing an event for the community at the end of each session which will feature art and music created by the participants.
We hope that through this program we can foster a desire in the participants to become agents of change in their communities.
